CNES Frame, France

Customer:  SEREC

Reason for project: Metafab Solutions were excited to be approached by a new customer, SEREC, to support them with the manufacturing and delivery of a moveable main steel cage to support the launch of a French space rocket for CNES – The Centre Nationale d’etudes spatiales.

The Challenge:

When we were first contacted by Benoit from SEREC for a quotation, it was August 2018 and we were informed that the steel fabricated frame was required to be delivered to a location in France by 30th October 2018 .  A detailed schedule would most definitely be required!

In addition to this, we were also informed that the steel platform needed to be electronically moveable and that the electronics would need to be fitted by us before it left the UK for France.  A tall order and quite a challenge however, this was something that we couldn’t wait to do!  It’s not often that our team have an extraordinary opportunity to work on a project that is linked with a rocket going to space.  With our Projects Director and the team of welder fabricators, we began to formulate a plan for the works and delivery by the required date.

The Outcome:

Our Projects Director, Michael Chung, immediately set about the ordering of the steel materials required to fit the specification of the design drawings received as well as contacting electronics specialists that had previous experience of working on this type of steel platform project.

With everything arriving to our site on schedule and an electronics specialist appointed, the works began in earnest and the platform began to take shape.

We were thrilled to be able to deliver the steel platform, with working moveable elements, on time and to budget by the deadline.

Michael Chung, Projects Director, stated ‘it’s not an everyday occurrence to have something we built move from the UK, to deliver it to a location in France and then know it was taken to Guadeloupe where it was used in a rocket launch.  It was an incredibly tight timescale, but we came through for our customer, on time, on budget, and are proud of the work we achieved. Sometimes we are asked to provide a particular service, in this case electronics, that’s a little bit out of the usual, but we’re happy to manage these aspects if it delivers what the customer needs.’

Hinkley Point C Reactor at Bridgewater

Customer/Client: Hinkley Point C reactor at Bridgewater. – Dean Smith, Project manager

Reason for project: During the creation of a Visitor Centre to showcase the new Hinkley Point C Reactor, we were asked to provide 2no. 2 metre diameter hanging canopies which were to house projectors within them.  We quickly realised that we would need a solution to give more stability to the hanging canopies than we had at first expected.

We required Metafabs to manufacture and supply a steel support structure to support 2no. 2 metre diameter hanging canopies.  This was a time sensitive instruction because it was a late addition to the project and, therefore, required a quick turnaround.  The project provided us with a number of issues which had to be overcome, the first of these was the building remaining open whilst we worked and the second related to access issues through a single, standard height door, across a paved courtyard….and it is a grade 1 listed site!

The Challenge:

One of the greatest challenges was to get the stability required for the canopies with limited fixing points due to the nature of the grade 1 listing, these would require careful selection and approval. The canopies would house projectors which required less than 0.5mm deflection to work correctly requiring a large stable structure but with minimal interference to the building.

The Outcome:

Michael came to site on a number of occasions to discuss our options and aid in the design of the structure which proved to be invaluable. Metafab were then able to provide lifting equipment which would lift the steel work into place and also a platform which would allow them to overcome a particularly difficult problem with safe access to a fixing position inside a duct area which had us all scratching our heads! Access into the building was overcome by them creating a simple sectional build as well as changing the wheels of their trolleys used, to non-marking and ply sheeting the work area to protect the listed flooring. A late change of measurement on one section due to the nature of the buildings structure was overcome with no drama and almost overnight.

Southsea LCT 7074 WWII Ship moved for storage and exhibition – ETFE extrusion

Customer/Client: Architen Landrell Manufacturing Ltd. – Mark Jenkins, Senior Project Manager

Reason for project: To fabricate, cut and drill the aluminium extrusion which would provide and support a shelter consisting of 13no. PVC panels with all associated components to the specified design drawings.

The Challenge

Architen Landrell were approached by Pritchard Architects working for the National Museum of the Royal Navy on a nationally significant project to relocate the last remaining Landing Craft Tank from the D-Day landings to Southsea, just outside the D-Day Museum.

They were designing the proposed canopy to go over the ship, which was a large cantilevered curved structure. Originally the design was a single ply roof and timber soffit, which came in over the budget.

Architen were approached to look at alternative ways of achieving the canopy and, following meetings with the Architect and Portsmouth Council, were commissioned to provide a PVC option comprising 13 no. PVC panels with all associated components.

The tolerances on the fabrication work was critical in order for the installation to be carried out successfully.

After working with Metafabs over several years, they have a good understanding of the challenges Architen Landrell experience on site.

They have consistently provided a very professional and personal service throughout the years.

Strategy and Outcome

A successfully built canopy to protect the Landing Craft Tank was completed on budget and to deadline.

T24 Trailer Framework

Customer/Client: JB Towers – Naomi Burridge, PSMO & Steel Manager

Reason for project: To increase and boost the mobile telephone signal for users at specific outdoor events so as to eliminate overuse of the local network. The product was born out of need and requirement in this modern age of mobile telephone usage for calls, data, and social media at these exquisite events.

The Brief: To use the 3D model provided, to develop and improve it for fabrication, galvanizing, and installation of the steelwork structure to the provided transportation chassis.

There were 120 No. components, plus ironmongery, to form this complex structure which had to be fabricated by Metafab  Solutions with precision as there were tight tolerances for this moving structure.

The Challenge:

There were no challenges to overcome as Michael & his team effortlessly dealt with any issues that arose for the smooth delivery of the project.

Strategy and Outcome

Michael provided weekly photos of the progress being made so that the client was fully aware of the progress made by his team.  With the time constraints given to Metafab, I do not think that there were any other actions which Michael & his team could have improved on.

We have dealt with Metafab Solutions for over 3 years now, whilst I know that Metafab were very new to the telecoms industry, Michael has adapted very well indeed, becoming a major help to the supply chain, we would call Metafab Solutions a partner into providing the solution to our customers need.

Michael, we know that we can rely on you for planned and unplanned works, keep up the good work and thank you for always providing 100% from returning quotes, providing solutions, and delivering the product.

You are a star, and we value our JBT/Metafabs relationship.

Wallington Square

Customer/Client: Fabric Architecture Solutions – Nigel Browne, Tensile Structures Consultant

Reason for project: The structure was specified to revitalise a dated shopping centre by covering ‘The Street’ between two rows of retail outlets to give an all-weather community space and external hospitality. Metafab reviewed our drawings to draw attention to possible cost savings and to ensure there were no abnormalizes before, and during, manufacture.

The Challenge

Being a shopping centre, the site was busy and being used by shoppers and workers.  Metafabs attended regular client meetings to fully understand the site restrictions, particularly regarding the challenge of just-in-time deliveries, and organised loading sequences as there was no site storage in this confined space.

Other Challenges :

  • Unloading by crane on a very busy high street requiring both traffic and pedestrian management.
  • Night working to minimise disruption to retail outlets.
  • Noise management to minimise disruption to residence.
  • Rain-water management.
  • Lighting and CCTV.
  • Fire and smoke venting.
  • Vandalism – We were sad to know that some ‘scamps’ were trying their best to damage the structures. Metafabs provided expert touch up painting after installation to paint over any mess and make good.
  • Welfare facilities.

Strategy and Outcome

Even with these challenges, Metafabs created, fabricated and painted all of the steel components for the project and delivered on time despite the restrictions in place.

Customer/Client: : ICR Sutton (institute of Cancer Research)

Location:  Sutton, London, UK

Reason for project: Klima-therm was approached by his customer to carry out modification on two of the existing previously installed RHOSS chillers. This project consisted in the installation of 16 No Podded Silencers on top of the existing RHOSS chillers (8 for chiller).

The Brief:

Klima-therm employed Metafab Solutions to carry out this job, Metafab scope of work included the following:

  • Survey
  • Supply and deliver of the equipment
  • Installation of the PODS
  • Project management.

The Challenge:

As per most of our project the biggest challenge was to keep our customer happy and to work on only one chiller at a time making sure that the other one was on and capable to take the load.

Strategy and Outcome

Metafab brilliantly approached the job.

From day one they kept us / our customer informed on every single step of the project.

On the day of delivery, they had a person on site waiting for the equipment to be delivered.

The L&S aspect of the installation (including traffic management) was completed safely keeping the customer happy at all time.

Overall, the entire job was completed in the best possible manner.

Nothing could have be done better in this project.
