Wallington Square

Customer/Client: Fabric Architecture Solutions – Nigel Browne, Tensile Structures Consultant

Reason for project: The structure was specified to revitalise a dated shopping centre by covering ‘The Street’ between two rows of retail outlets to give an all-weather community space and external hospitality. Metafab reviewed our drawings to draw attention to possible cost savings and to ensure there were no abnormalizes before, and during, manufacture.

The Challenge

Being a shopping centre, the site was busy and being used by shoppers and workers.  Metafabs attended regular client meetings to fully understand the site restrictions, particularly regarding the challenge of just-in-time deliveries, and organised loading sequences as there was no site storage in this confined space.

Other Challenges :

  • Unloading by crane on a very busy high street requiring both traffic and pedestrian management.
  • Night working to minimise disruption to retail outlets.
  • Noise management to minimise disruption to residence.
  • Rain-water management.
  • Lighting and CCTV.
  • Fire and smoke venting.
  • Vandalism – We were sad to know that some ‘scamps’ were trying their best to damage the structures. Metafabs provided expert touch up painting after installation to paint over any mess and make good.
  • Welfare facilities.

Strategy and Outcome

Even with these challenges, Metafabs created, fabricated and painted all of the steel components for the project and delivered on time despite the restrictions in place.
